The collodion process ("collodion wet plate process") was invented by Frederick Scott Archer. It was introduced in the 1850s and by the end of that decade it had almost entirely replaced daguerreotype. In 1880s, it was replaced by gelatin dry plates. Today, collodion process is still very intresting becsue it's like a magic.
１９５０年代に発明された湿板コロジオン法は１８５０年代の末にはダゲレオタイプに変わって主流になりました。１８８０年代に乾板が登場すると主流の座を追われました。
We can get gray negative picture on glass plate. There are two ways to see the plate.
(1) Print picture on pater using the negative plate
(2) Ambrotype. Just put plate on black background and directly see the plate as positive.
In this workshop by Tamura syashin, our target was (2) Ambrotype. We need dark negative for (1) so we need longer exposure time. We need bright negative for (2) so shorter exposure time. When I made digital copy, I used both two ways for same Ambrotype plate.
カラスの上に灰色のネガ画像が乗った湿板のガラス原板には二通りの観賞方法があります。
（１）印画紙の上に原板を置いてプリントし、紙の写真として観賞する。
（２）黒い布の上に原板を置くとポジ画像に見えるので、これを直接観賞する。アンブロタイプと呼ばれる。
今回のワークショップでは（２）のアンブロタイプが目標です。アンブロタイプは薄いネガ画像を使いますので、露光時間が短くてすみます。また、ガラス原板上の銀画像を直接見るので、紙では得られない輝きがあります。

After fixing was done, I made a mistake when I dried the glass plate. I had to wipe backside of plate by pater, but I wiped front collodion side. As a result, some scratches on my face. Because no notches on glass plate, it's difficult to knwo which is collodion side when the glass plate is wet.
定着後にミスを犯しました。乾燥前にガラス裏面を紙で拭く必要がありますが、間違えて画像のある表面を拭いてしまったのです。この結果、顔の付近の引っかき傷がたくさんできてしまいました。乾燥後にニスをかけて表面に保護膜をつけた後は拭いても大丈夫なのですが、ニスがけ前に拭くと傷が付きます。
